the new Omicron strain
There is still far more speculation about all issues with this new virus than can be conclusively stated.
A reputable online source states that 11 countries have reported cases of the Omicron strain. According to that article, there appear to be about 160 cases identified. That is a tiny number to date but will grow with time. It is expected to take 2-4 weeks before any general conclusions can be safely made.
Most of the comments from experts in the fields of virology and infectious disease are still theoretical in nature.
At present (which is still very early), it does not appear to be more contagious or more virulent (cause more severe disease).
The WHO states that there may cause a risk of getting infected with this strain, even if one has already had COVID-19. The data supporting that statement has yet to be revealed, and so remains speculation.
What can you do?
The obvious: 1) get vaccinated and boostered, 2) be prepared to begin wearing face masks more diligently, and 3) decide on international travel with caution.
